Where are they now: Matt Jones

I’m going to start a new series of blogs that takes a look at where some of our favorite Razorbacks are now. First up in that series will be Matt Jones.  Matt Jones had a great college career at Arkansas. He was involved in putting the Razorbacks in the record books for having played in the longest played football games going into 7 overtimes. Jones was a great runner and a decent passer which is why when he went to the NFL he was drafted 21st overall in the first round by the Jacksonville Jaguars as a wide receiver. Jones spent from 2005-2008 with the Jags. His first few years were fairly productive but his last few years were not.  2008 was the beginning of the end for Matt Jones. He was suspended for some games for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. In July 2008 Jones was arrested for possession of cocaine and marijuana. In March of 2009 Jones was released from the Jaguars after he failed a drug test that showed he had alcohol in his system thus violating his probation. He decided to go to jail instead of attending a treatment program. He missed the entire 2009 season.  Jones signed a one year contract with the Cincinnati Bengals in February 2010. Jones was cut by the team during roster cuts. The Washington Redskins were said to be interested in trying him out this past November but Jones declined because he was retiring from football. I don’t know what is next for this one time Razorback legend but I do know that he wasted his talents that lots of men would loved to have had.
UPDATE: Matt Jones has recently been doing a Captains Panel with Arkansas Sports Nation on KARZ channel 42 in Little Rock, Arkansas. Matt joins David Bazzel and Clint Stoerner. Matt is also on twitter @donslims
UPDATE: November 2013 Matt is currently the co-host of Overtime on 103.7 The Buzz in Little Rock, Arkansas. It can be heard from 1-4pm Monday thru Friday.
