Where are they now: Matt Jones

I’m going to start a new series of blogs that takes a look at where some of our favorite Razorbacks are now. First up in that series will be Matt Jones.  Matt Jones had a great college career at Arkansas. He was involved in putting the Razorbacks in the record books for having played in the longest played football games going into 7 overtimes. Jones was a great runner and a decent passer which is why when he went to the NFL he was drafted 21st overall in the first round by the Jacksonville Jaguars as a wide receiver. Jones spent from 2005-2008 with the Jags. His first few years were fairly productive but his last few years were not.  2008 was the beginning of the end for Matt Jones. He was suspended for some games for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. In July 2008 Jones was arrested for possession of cocaine and marijuana. In March of 2009 Jones was released from the Jaguars after he failed a drug test that showed he had alcohol in his system thus violating his probation. He decided to go to jail instead of attending a treatment program. He missed the entire 2009 season.  Jones signed a one year contract with the Cincinnati Bengals in February 2010. Jones was cut by the team during roster cuts. The Washington Redskins were said to be interested in trying him out this past November but Jones declined because he was retiring from football. I don’t know what is next for this one time Razorback legend but I do know that he wasted his talents that lots of men would loved to have had.
UPDATE: Matt Jones has recently been doing a Captains Panel with Arkansas Sports Nation on KARZ channel 42 in Little Rock, Arkansas. Matt joins David Bazzel and Clint Stoerner. Matt is also on twitter @donslims
UPDATE: November 2013 Matt is currently the co-host of Overtime on 103.7 The Buzz in Little Rock, Arkansas. It can be heard from 1-4pm Monday thru Friday.

  1. Oh Matt Jones, we know you had the talent but you didn't have the heart.

    1. Heart? He definetly had heart, this is the same guy who lead the rzbcks into 7 overtimes, his freshman year....In my opinion, he lost some love for football, when he had to play WR, instead of what he love more, QBCkn

    2. NO, the kid had no heart. If you had the talent to even get into the NFL, yet alone be drafted in the 1st round.. I don't care who you are, you should be excited to be playing professionally. Instead, he took his money and did nothing with it except partied. He should have spent time learning how to become one of the great WR's.. but, nope. Rachael is right.. the kid had no heart but he sure did have the talent.

In 20 years, if he's still alive, he'll look back at this and realize how much of an idiot he was (if he hasn't already.

  5. Met this young man on line one evening a few years back...I am old enough to be his grandmother. It was a couple of years ago and he was angry and bitter.Some- where along the way Matt never found Love, Acceptance, Dignity and Respect anywhere but on a field. Not sure if he ever figured out he is a PCG. Sad for him but hopefully he will find his way back to himself. "At least there is hope for a tree: If it is cut down, it will sprout again"..Job 14:7...There is a Higher power that has a strategy for broken trees and limbs and lives and souls...It is not repair, but regrowth...Being granted the gift to start over: Can't be fixed but can be made new...Job 14:6-12..There is life off the field...All the secrets he needs are hidden within himself...He has only to find them.

  6. My View: With all that talent, Matt was not an addict. He was caught ONCE with Coke. He gave it up, but I hold the Judge that put the "NO BEER" provision in her decision in contempt. She might as well have sent him to Tucker Farm right then. For God's sake: Two beers on a golf course and his life is ruined. She cost Matt his career and deprived all football a nice young man who happened to be a prodigy.

  7. As a Jaguar fan I was truly disappointed with Matt Jones. He had such potential, and I'm sure he wanted to be QB but if he was smart and realized that he had the talent to be an amazing WR (and make millions doing so), I would've shut my mouth and played my hardest. Instead, he partied all the time and wasted our time and money. I was a bouncer in Jacksonville during his time there and he loved to come to one of the bars I would work at.. Even after his suspension, you could see him all wacked out and drunk with his buddy Reggie Williams (another busted WR with the same problem as Matt Jones)
